Absorption, Distribution, Metabolism, Excretion (ADME) testing is used to determine which factors enhance or inhibit how a potential lead compound reaches the blood stream, whether distribution of the compound is affected by binding to plasma proteins, how age, genetics or other factors influence how the compound is metabolized, or how pH and disease can have an effect on how the compound is excreted from a system. Many companies perform ADME studies utilizing various assays or automated bioanalysis techniques. Some of these companies also offer radiolabeled ADME services performed in vitro or in a variety of animal species to determine drug disposition.
